Wow… I have been in Korea for 2 months already. I am getting used to the life here. Yet, I still have culture shock sometimes and dislike some of the food that is too salty or/and spicy here. Here is a summary of what I like and dislike about life in Korea:
Likes:
- the culture where man must protect women
- the army training has make the younger generation of Koreans more discipline
- special privileges or treatment for foreigners – sometimes the aunties even give us food for free
- the weather here is not so hot – it will never be as burning hot as in Malaysia
- get to know many other foreigners from different countries
- the learning environment and culture – students here are not so book worms, they learned from seminars, experiments, research etc
- students here are good academically and active in club activities – students even come to campus for club activities or to their club rooms during holidays
- close relationships between juniors, seniors and professors – students here respect their professors a lot
- comfortable and homely lab – there are coffee, hot water, towels, fridge etc
- more peaceful – do not need worry much when walking around the campus late at night
- there are a variety of ice-creams. Yum yum~
Dislikes:
- 90% of the population smokes and it is increasing.
- most Korean guys smoke and drink(soju in Korea is cheap, less than 1,000 won each)
- the food servings here is too much – around 2 times the amount of food in Kuala Lumpur
- I do not like the cabbage kimchi here! It is spicy and served in all the restaurants that I have being to
- too many staircase – going to anywhere requires a lot of walking
- high cost of living – things here are generally 3 to 4 times more expensive
- expensive “Made in China” goods, though the quality is much more better
- Koreans generally have a bad command of English, leading to communication problem
- Koreans like to talk to each other in Korean, forgetting us who do not understand Korean language
- some of the weird ways of dressing, especially girls when their make up is too much
